Brendan, I love “spirited maladjustment” so dang much. Thank you for that. Speaking from experience, once the listener’s own maladjustment falls under the influence of this particular spirit (ouch, sorry, had to do it… also kinda fits in with the religion motif too though), Pavement replaces Nirvana as the zeitgeist of the 90s.

Thank you, John. That's a really interesting idea.

What gives me pause is that I still see Nirvana t-shirts 3-4x a week, worn by strangers who are seemingly unwitting participants in this kind of '90s nostalgia project (I don't think >70% are actually active listeners to the band). Sure, it's kind of a simulation -- you really can't call them "Nirvana fans". But it's so hard to gauge that level of influence, you know?

I appreciate the pushback. My comment was more of a tweet than a thesis. In reality, Nirvana are the 90s, but in the reality I inhabit, the same reality I suspect you and many other sports fans who did well in English class inhabit as well, Pavement is firmly on the Mount Rushmore of 90s rock. (I am totally abandoning any measure of objectivity and instead extrapolating from a sample-size of about 2, hence the tweet comment). Conversation to be continued over a beverage

Incredible! To love and idolize a band as a teen, and as an adult to recognize its flaws and drawbacks, as well as gain further confidence in their message is really special. Loved reading this
